Director

Helping cities and regions make the consequential choices that shape how they grow, compete, and invest.

CivicSol is seeking a Director to lead client work in economic development, workforce, and public strategy for cities and regions. The Director runs multiple client engagements at once and leads proposal development, working directly with CivicSol’s Partners.

This is a full-time, fully remote position that reports to the Partners. The Director works regularly with city managers, economic development leaders, and partner organizations across the country, with periodic travel for site visits and client work sessions.

Key Responsibilities

Project delivery and coordination

  • Lead multiple client engagements from strategy through implementation, with responsibility for work quality, schedules, scope, and client coordination.
  • Coordinate project teams and specialist contributors, establish clear assignments, and review work for accuracy, strategic logic, and consistency.
  • Lead development of client-facing deliverables using CivicSol frameworks and templates.
  • Produce high-quality staff work, including options, draft recommendations, and structured materials that inform client decisions.
  • Serve as a client-facing lead in meetings, work sessions, and on-site engagements.
  • Use Claude and CivicSol’s AI-assisted workflows daily to support research, analysis, writing, and proposal development, with responsibility for source verification, accuracy, and final work quality.
  • Identify and address project risks early to keep engagements on schedule and on scope.

Data analysis and insights

  • Lead peer benchmarking, cluster analysis, and related economic and workforce analytics.
  • Synthesize data into clear, decision-relevant insights for public-sector leaders.
  • Prepare analytic materials that support client work sessions and strategic discussions.
  • Ensure accuracy and rigor across all analytic work products.

Proposals and business development

  • Lead proposal development for assigned RFPs and RFQs, from strategy through submission.
  • Translate Partner direction into clear, competitive, submission-ready proposals.
  • Manage proposal schedules, inputs, and production to meet deadlines.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate has managed complex public-sector engagements and is comfortable moving between analysis and client work.

  • 5–7 years of experience in city government or public management, economic development, or public-sector consulting, including at least 3 years managing client engagements or multi-stakeholder projects. Experience on both the public-sector and consulting sides is strongly preferred.
  • Deep AI and Claude experience for research, analysis, and writing, with the judgment to direct the tools and check their output.
  • Bachelor’s degree in public policy, economics, planning, business, or a related field; master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience with strategy work such as economic development plans, sector strategies, or workforce initiatives.
  • Working knowledge of economic and labor market data, including Lightcast or similar tools, Census and BLS sources, and advanced Excel, with experience interpreting location quotient and shift-share analysis.
  • Strong writing skills, with experience producing memos, reports, and presentations for senior public-sector audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple engagements and deadlines in a fast-paced, remote environment.
